Welcome to 8th Grade. The theme of 8th Grade is social justice. We will be talking about some of the darkest moments in history and we will look at these moments through the lens of what people did or did not do to help or hurt the situation. The expectation for this year is that you will use all of the tools that I have given you over the last 2 years to make the classroom dynamic and productive. In 8th grade, participation is mandatory. By this time, you know that I expect you to share. That is even more the case in 8th grade. We learn from each other and the only way we can do that is to share with each other.
8th grade is going to focus on how we as individuals impact the world. We will be exploring, in great detail, the topics of slavery, reconstruction and racial segregation, the Holocaust, and the civil rights movement. After each unit, students are going to participate in a variety of cumulative projects that will challenge each student to express what they have learned and how they have learned it. 8th grade students will seek to answer the following questions:

- What power do citizens have to shape the democracy/community that they live in?
